Bowel Cleansing
We talk freely about poo. It's what we do. We do it because not enough people are having conversations about poo. We need to normalise these conversations, because in doing so, we may just help someone avoid bowel cancer. And with bowel cancer rates currently 1 in 13, wouldn't that be a lovely thing.
Clearing The Path For Detox & Better Health
Your bowel plays a huge role in your detox system. When it slows down, it is rarely an overnight problem. It happens gradually. Each day a little waste gets left behind, often because of stress, dehydration, rushing through meals, low fibre intake or not moving your body enough. Over time this build-up can make the bowel sluggish and congested.
When that happens, the liver still works hard to filter toxins out, but with no clear pathway for elimination, those toxins have nowhere to go. Instead of leaving the body, they get pushed back and recycled into the bloodstream, placing even more pressure on the liver and your whole detox system.
A proper bowel cleanse helps clear out this congestion, improves nutrient absorption and gives your body the solid foundation it needs for safe, effective detoxification.
When the bowel is moving well, it also takes pressure off the liver. With a clear pathway for waste to leave the body, the liver can detox more efficiently and do its job without everything backing up.
"At the root of all disease is a backed up bowel, and a liver that is stressed as a result."
Why Bowel Cleansing Is Essential For Detox
If you leave a little waste behind every day, over months and years it begins to accumulate.
This trapped waste interferes with:
- Nutrient absorption
- Efficient digestion
- Toxin elimination
- Liver function
- Overall energy and wellbeing
A backed-up bowel compromises bowel transit time and becomes a major source of toxicity.
Bowel transit time is the amount of time it takes for food to move through your digestive tract and leave the body. When transit time is too slow, waste sits in the bowel longer than it should, which can lead to bloating, sluggishness and a higher chance of toxins being reabsorbed. When it is too fast, your body may struggle to absorb nutrients properly.
A healthy transit time helps your gut stay balanced, supports detoxification and keeps everything moving the way it should.
The waste that gets left behind during this process, ends up being recycled through the body, creating inflammation, fatigue, skin issues, hormonal imbalances and long-term congestion.
“The minute you mess with bowel transit, you begin to create the possibility for disease.”
When the bowel is congested, the liver cannot do its job, and when the liver struggles, every single cell in your body suffers as a result.
How Waste Builds Up In The Body
Most people don’t realise how much waste the body holds onto when the bowel slows down. We believe that most people have anywhere between 5 and 15kgs of impacted waste sitting in their digestive tract - and sometimes it's sitting there for years!
Factors that contribute to this include:
- Microbiome imbalance
- Low fibre diets
- Long-term constipation
- Chronic dehydration
- Stress
- Poor digestion
- Sluggish liver or gallbladder
- Highly processed foods
This is why bowel cleansing is the first step in most detox journeys - the body simply can’t eliminate toxins when the exit pathways are blocked.
Everyone Responds Differently to Bowel Cleansing
We don’t know how your body will respond to a bowel cleanse until you begin this process. It is impossible for us to know because we don’t yet know what’s sitting in your system, how long it's been sitting there, and how ready your body is to let go of this waste.
This is why the results vary from one person to another. No two people detox the same way, or at the same pace.
- Some people feel lighter and energised quickly
- Others experience fluctuations in mood, energy or bowel habits
- Some may release years of waste or mucous, and as this process begins there may be cramping, sweating and other detox symptoms
- Others may notice parasites or biofilm coming through
Your genetic predispositions also influence your results, as does your medical and family history.
This work is not one size fits all, which is why regular check-ins and proper supervision make such a difference.
Custom Bowel Cleansing vs General Protocols
Renew Health Co. offers both customised bowel cleansing guidance and general DIY options. However, not everyone is ready to begin cleansing straight away. Some clients need to focus on foundational habits first, such as:
- Increasing daily water intake
- Improving overall diet
- Stabilising bowel movements
- Reducing inflammation
- Supporting the gut microbiome
Jumping straight into a bowel cleanse when the bowel is already impacted can actually make constipation worse, so sometimes we need to adjust the process before beginning.
Our Self-led Detox protocols are expertly crafted and suitable for most people, but even then, some individuals will require tweaks to suit their unique digestion, microbiome and history of constipation.
What You May Notice During A Bowel Cleanse
Every cleanse looks different from person to person, but many people notice:
- Increased bowel movements
- Changes in stool frequency and consistency
- Release of mucous, plaque or parasites
- Fluctuations in energy and mood
- Temporary symptoms such as headaches or nausea
- Emotional detox as physical toxins move out
These are normal signs that your body is clearing congestion and beginning to heal.
If constipation occurs at any point, cleansing should pause until adjustments are made.
Supporting Your Body Through The Process
-
The DO'S of Any Cleanse
- Remember that you are a unique human, so what works for one person may not work for you, if you have lots going on with your health maybe booking a consult will be the best starting point for you
- Always stay hydrated and aim to drink at least 2.5 litres of filtered water daily (avoid tap and bottled water)
- Flood the body with fresh juices & smoothies for maximise nutrient uptake
- Herbal teas can support your digestive system and improve hydration on cold days
- Coconut water for electrolytes is a great option
- Veggie broth can be helpful when appetite is low
- Plenty of fruits, vegetables & healthy fats can support inflammation levels
- Chew your food well always
- Avoid drinking fluids when eating food as this compromises gastric acid levels
- Avoid eating when stressed
- Light movement like walking after a meal
- Epsom salt baths are excellent for when you're feeling 'detoxy'
- Peppermint oil is wonderful for alleviating headaches
- Ginger or chamomile tea helps to alleviate nausea
-
The DON'TS of Any Cleanse:
- Be mindful when taking advice from (unqualified) influencers on social media as it may not be appropriate for you
- Have realistic expectations, it didn't take you a minute to get here, there are years of toxicity to deal with, patience is paramount
- Remember there is an order to detox and it seldom starts with taking herbs, first do an assessment. Where are your toxins coming from? Eliminate or reduce first: no point detoxing if you're vaping or smoking
- We've seen the damage that alcohol can do to the liver, even a glass of wine a night can perpetuate your liver stress, it burdens the liver and acidifies the blood so even giving it a break while you're detoxing is wise
- Refined sugar has got to to, this is going to mess with liver and pancreatic function
- Processed and pre-packaged foods are going to perpetuate an acidic state potentially adding to the detox symptoms
- Avoid excess caffeine intake so that you minimise risk of dehydration
- Avoid overeating as this burdens your gut
- Allow a good amount of time between your last meal of the day and bedtime (aim for a minimum of 4 hours so you're not digesting instead of resting)
Who Needs Preparation Before Beginning a Bowel Cleanse?
Some people need a little extra support before they’re ready to begin cleansing.
You may need foundational prep if you:
- Struggle with chronic constipation
- Don’t drink enough water daily
- Eat a highly processed diet
- Experience bloating or sluggish digestion
- Have long-term gut issues
- Have a history of antibiotic use
- Have signs of liver congestion
- Experience ongoing fatigue
In these cases, we begin by restoring hydration, supporting digestion, and nurturing the microbiome before introducing herbs or binders.
Why Check-Ins & Supervision Are Important
Because everyone is so different, supervision helps ensure you’re progressing safely.
We may need to adjust your cleanse based on:
- How often you’re eliminating
- What you’re releasing
- Hydration levels
- Digestive symptoms
- Detox reactions
- Your personal health history
Quick questions can't be safely answered via social media - which is why consultations are essential for support along the way. Proper guidance ensures the cleanse is effective and that you're supported throughout the process.
The Role of Enemas & Colonics
We really support at-home enemas and professional colonics. We have some excellent colon hydrotherapists in our network across Australia that we work closely with to support you on your wellness journey. Both enemas and colonics are incredibly supportive during both bowel and parasite cleansing.
They help to:
- Remove loosened waste
- Flush out dead parasites
- Reduce toxin reabsorption
- Prevent constipation
- Clear blockages
- Support the liver by lowering internal toxic load
They’re especially useful if your bowel tends to slow down or if you experience detox symptoms.
Why We Encourage Taking Photos
As confronting as it may feel at first, taking photos of what comes out during cleansing is incredibly helpful.
Over the years, we’ve heard countless stories from people who noticed signs of bowel cancer long before their diagnosis. Many of these early clues were visible in the toilet bowl. Blood, mucous, undigested food. There is so much valuable information right there that could make all the difference to your healing journey.
"If you don't look, how will you see? Don't flush away the evidence that could save your life."
Looking in the bowl before you flush allows us to:
- Identify what’s being released
- Monitor your progress
- Understand your level of congestion
- See whether parasites, mucous or plaque are present
- Adjust your cleanse accurately
- Ensure your detox is moving safely
Your bowel movements tell a powerful story about your internal health. We are experts at reviewing 'poo pics', it's definitely what we're famous for! When we review these photos we can offer incredible insights to what is happening during your detox.
Parasite Cleansing: Why It Matters
Parasites are far more common than most people realise. They thrive in a toxic, congested bowel and often go undetected for years.
They can impact:
- Mental health
- Mental health (yes, we write this again because this is one thing that so many people overlook!)
- Digestion
- Immunity
- Skin health
- Hormones
- Iron levels
- Energy
- Sleep
- Nutrient absorption
We have countless stories of how people were experiencing horrible anxiety both before and during a parasite cleanse only to then release clumps of parasites and then go on to feeling like a normal human again.
Parasites also release toxins that burden your liver and nervous system - which is why parasite cleansing can have such a profound effect on wellbeing.
What Are Parasites & How Do We Get Them?
Parasites can feel like little vampires, draining your energy on multiple levels.
Physically, they steal nutrients your body needs. Energetically, they can disrupt your gut and brain chemistry, leaving you feeling flat or out of balance. And for many people, there’s also a spiritual component, because they are living organisms that can influence how you feel on a deeper level.
Many people believe that eating raw fish is the only way to end up with parasites, but that couldn’t be further from the truth.
There are many potential sources of exposure: contaminated food like fish, pork, or chicken, unfiltered water, pets, soil, travel, and even inadequately washed produce.
Common parasites include:
- Giardia
- Blastocystis hominis
- Dientamoeba fragilis
- Pinworms
- Roundworms
- Tapeworms
- Hookworms
- Liver flukes
Many people carry parasites without knowing - their symptoms are often mislabelled as IBS, fatigue, anxiety, skin issues, or hormonal imbalances.
Common Symptoms Of Parasitic Infection
Parasites can cause a wide range of symptoms, including:
- Bloating or gas
- Constipation or diarrhoea
- Abdominal pain
- Nausea
- Rashes, hives or acne
- Iron deficiency
- Chronic fatigue
- Brain fog
- Mood swings, irritability, anxiety
- Teeth grinding at night
- Sleep disturbances
- Increased appetite or loss of appetite
- Sugar cravings
- Anal itching (especially at night)
- Feeling worse around the full moon
These symptoms occur because parasites disrupt digestion, steal nutrients, and release toxins.
Common Mistakes When Parasite Cleansing
Jumping Straight Into A Parasite Cleanse
Parasite cleansing without preparing the bowel is unsafe.
If the bowel isn’t clear, dead parasites cannot be eliminated, and their toxins get reabsorbed into the bloodstream.
This can lead to:
- Severe die-off symptoms
- Constipation
- Headaches
- Nausea
- Mood swings
- Inflammation
- Worsening digestive issues
Bowel cleansing must always come first.
Not Using A Binding Agent
When parasites die, they release toxins, heavy metals, ammonia, and waste. A binding agent is absolutely essential to capture and remove this material safely.
Without a binder, these toxins can be reabsorbed - causing symptoms and slowing your progress.
At Renew Health Co. our binding agent of choice is Saybo Super Binder, used carefully within our structured cleansing programs.
Using Over-the-Counter Parasite Cleanses
Over-the-counter parasite products often include harsh laxatives or incomplete formulas.
They typically:
- Don’t prepare the bowel
- Don’t include proper binders
- Irritate the gut lining
- Cause rapid die-off without safe elimination
- Worsen constipation
- Increase toxin reabsorption
For safe, effective parasite removal, a structured and supported approach is essential.
